How fire extinguisher works ?

Using fire extinguishers for preventing fire

There are many types of fire extinguishers that are available in the market. The correct type of fire extinguisher should be used to fight the correct type of fire. Failing to follow this rule, hazard may increase to uncontrollable proportions.

Fire extinguishers are mainly of two types, the stored pressure fire extinguisher and the generated pressure fire extinguisher. The stored pressure fire extinguisher uses compressed nitrogen, while the generated pressure one uses compressed carbon dioxide.

How stored pressure fire extinguisher works?

In the stored pressure fire extinguisher, there is a small cylinder, which is filled with the compressed gas. The release valve present in the cylinder keeps the gas from escaping. There is a safety pin provided with the extinguisher, which is to be pulled first. Then the handle is to be squeezed. On squeezing the handle, it causes the valve to open and release the gas.

The compressed gas thus released applies pressure on the extinguishing material, which is in turn released from the nozzle of the extinguisher. As the fire extinguishing material comes out of the nozzle, it is aimed at the base of the fire in a side-by-side motion.

It is advisable to keep a safe distance from the fire while trying to put it out using a fire extinguisher. Another thing that must be kept in mind is that the fire extinguisher is to be aimed at the base of the fire and not at the flames.

Using the correct type of fire extinguisher while fighting a fire accident would help in putting out the fire. If the accident is a large scale one that cannot be overpowered by fire extinguishers, it is better to call for firefighters.
